Why Every Chimney Needs a Cap

An uncapped chimney collects rain every time it rains. That water pools at the base of the flue, soaks into the masonry liner, and accelerates the same freeze-thaw deterioration that drives the most expensive chimney repairs. In a single Ohio winter with 38+ inches of annual precipitation and dozens of freeze cycles, an uncapped chimney can sustain the equivalent of years of normal wear.

Beyond water, open chimneys attract wildlife. Starlings, chimney swifts, raccoons, and squirrels nest inside unprotected flues — blocking airflow, creating fire hazards, and requiring wildlife removal before the chimney can be used again. A stainless steel cap with tight mesh screen prevents access entirely.

Downdraft is another common problem. When wind blows across an uncapped chimney at certain angles, it can push air down the flue instead of allowing it to draft upward — forcing smoke back into your home. Wind-directional caps with rotating tops eliminate this problem by always presenting the opening away from the wind. A chimney inspection will identify whether downdraft is your issue and which cap design will fix it.

Chimney Cap Materials

Galvanized steel is the least expensive option and works fine as a short-term cap. However, in Northeast Ohio's wet climate, galvanized caps begin rusting within 5-7 years. Once the galvanized coating fails, rust accelerates and the cap deteriorates rapidly. Rust stains running down the chimney exterior are a reliable sign a galvanized cap is failing.

Stainless steel is our standard recommendation for most Twinsburg homes. Grade 304 stainless resists rust and corrosion for 15-20 years or more, handles high temperatures from wood fires, and holds its shape under Ohio freeze-thaw conditions. The upfront cost over galvanized is modest, but the service life is two to three times longer.

Copper is the premium option for homes where appearance matters — older Hudson homes and estate-style properties where the chimney cap is visible from the street. Copper develops a natural patina over time and lasts indefinitely with no maintenance. It costs significantly more than stainless but never needs replacing if properly installed.

Top-Mount Dampers

A top-mount damper replaces both the cap and the traditional throat damper (the metal flap inside the fireplace that many older homes have). It installs at the top of the chimney and seals the entire flue with a rubber gasket when closed — compared to a throat damper, which seals only partially and allows significant conditioned air to escape.

Twinsburg homeowners with older fireplaces often have throat dampers that no longer seal properly — the metal warps over time from heat and the rubber or rope gasket deteriorates. A top-mount damper installation pays for itself in energy savings within a few heating seasons. The stainless steel body also functions as a cap, eliminating the need for a separate cap installation.

Top-mount dampers are operated by a stainless steel cable that runs down the inside of the flue to a hook on the firebox wall. When you want to use the fireplace, you release the cable to open the damper. When the fire is out and fully cool, you pull the cable to close and lock the damper. The locking mechanism prevents the damper from being opened by wind pressure or animals. After installation, we recommend chimney masonry is in good condition to get full benefit from the improved seal.
