Why Northeast Ohio Is Hard on Chimneys

Chimneys fail faster here than in most of the country, and it is not really about how cold it gets. It is about how often the temperature crosses the freezing line. Our region takes more than 38 inches of precipitation a year, and through the winter it thaws and refreezes over and over rather than staying frozen. Every one of those cycles is a small act of demolition.

Brick and mortar absorb water. When that water freezes it expands by roughly nine percent, pushing the masonry apart from the inside. Then it thaws, more water moves into the slightly wider gap, and it freezes again. That is why mortar joints go hollow, why brick faces pop off in flat chips — spalling — and why a hairline crack in a crown becomes a gap in two seasons. A chimney is the most exposed masonry on your house, standing above the roofline with no shelter at all.

Old Brick Needs Soft Mortar

This is where a lot of chimney repair goes wrong, and it matters on the older homes in Hudson, Cuyahoga Falls, and the older village housing across our area. Mortar is supposed to be softer than the brick around it. It is the sacrificial part — it absorbs the movement and erodes first, and you replace it every few decades. Modern portland-heavy mortar is harder than the soft brick used before about 1960. Put it on an old chimney and the brick becomes the weak point instead, so the faces spall off and you have turned a repointing job into brick replacement. We mix to match the original in both colour and hardness. It takes longer and it is the only way the repair lasts.

Two Counties, Two Sets of Rules

Our service area straddles a county line, and it changes the paperwork on a job. Twinsburg, Hudson, Macedonia, and Stow are in Summit County. Solon, Glenwillow, and Brecksville are in Cuyahoga County. Streetsboro is in Portage County. All of them enforce the Ohio Building Code and NFPA 211, so the standard your chimney has to meet is identical — but permit applications, fees, and inspection scheduling differ between them. We file in all three. You should not have to learn a county building department's process to get a liner installed.
